FAIR: NADA x Foreland, August 28-29, 2021
STONELEAF RETREAT is proud to present works by 2017 alumna Leah Dixon and 2021 alumna Dana Robinson at NADA x Foreland, during UPSTATE ART WEEKEND, August 28-29, 2021.
Dana Robinson "The Unbelievable Wig", 2021, dye on georgette silk, 42"x60". Robinson often works with found imagery from Ebony Magazine to “highlight the idea of upward mobility and a growing Black middle class” and this new work on silk is an extension of that. These works are made from semi transparent georgette silk which are painted with dye and the colors are left to bleed out into each other.
Leah Dixon, FUENTE DE LA JUVENTUD STEALTH BOMBER WITH HOLY WATER, 2019, wood, paint, water, light, 96x24x66 inches. This totem-like wooden sculpture features a recessed, light up cut-out silhouette of the American B-2 Stealth Bomber Fighter Jet, hovering above a bright red reflecting pool of water. The B-2 Spirit Stealth's design began in 1981 during the Cold War. It has been used in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and is such an incredible feat of engineering that it is scheduled to be in use by the American military past 2050. The iconic silhouette utilizes sacred geometry, and the rule of seven - most famously used in ancient Islamic architecture. The silhouette has also been found in traditional indigenous textiles from the American Southwest.
The piece creates a deceivingly harmonious aesthetic balance between contemporary Christian rituals, ancient symbolism, and the most expensive and dangerous nuclear bomber in the world - highlighting an American tendency to conflate religion, colonialism as patriotism, and war-for-profit dominance. While the subject-matter is heavy, there is a playfulness in the geometry, scale, and color. Guests are welcome to dip their hands in the 'holy water.'
Sales of these artworks will directly benefit the artists & the family residency program at STONELEAF. For further details please contact Helen at hello@stoneleafretreat.com
